Our Curriculum

Our academy aims to ensure that:

  • learning is dynamic, engaging and purposeful
  • each student achieves success and is provided with positive experiences
  • students access a broad, relevant and personalised curriculum to suit their own needs
  • students fully access the curriculum irrespective of gender, ethnicity, belief, social or cultural background, academic ability, specialised need or disability.

Following a referral to Olive AP Academy – Havering, each student is welcomed by our staff and taken through a detailed and supportive induction process. Parents/Carers are invited to meet academy staff to share key information and students are assessed so that a ‘baseline’ of their current academic levels (reading and writing skills; social skills; any additional needs) can be ascertained. When the assessment is completed, we create an individual learning plan for each student.

The curriculum consists of all activities planned by the academy to promote the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual, cultural and physical development of all our students. We offer a broad curriculum including core subjects (English, Maths, Science) alongside vocational and creative subjects. Students can work towards qualifications including GCSE, BTEC, NVQ, V Certs, Functional Skills and Arts Award. Students also take part in an outdoor education programme.

The academy provides all pupils with relationship and sex education (RSE) in line with government guidance.  Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Details of the curriculum and information for parents are included in our RSE policy.

Every student at the academy has an OA Coach to support and mentor them throughout their time at the academy – and during transition back into mainstream school or on to a college courses or apprenticeship. Olive Academies’ coaches are able to help students improve their social skills and build a tailored package of therapeutic support to meet each student’s needs. This can include anger management, restorative practice and counselling support.

As part of our careers programme, we ensure that students in years 8-11 find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer – through options evenings, assemblies, group discussions and taster events. Our students are also shown how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses available to them.
