KS4 (pupils in Year 10 & Year 11)
Following a referral to Olive AP Academy – Havering, each student is greeted by a member of our academy staff, and an assessment of their curriculum needs is made. Parents/Carers are invited to meet staff to share information.
Following interview, pupils are assessed so a ‘baseline’ of their current academic levels, reading and writing skills as well as social skills is established. When the assessment is completed, we create an individual learning plan. The plan will determine the educational pathway for each pupil and provide valuable information that teachers use to plan lessons.
Pupils in Years 10 or 11 are based in the main academy building in Hornchurch.
Our academy aims to ensure that:
– learning is dynamic, engaging and purposeful
– each student achieves success and is provided with positive experiences
– students access a broad, relevant and personalised curriculum to suit their own need
– students fully access the curriculum irrespective of gender, ethnicity, belief, social or cultural background, academic ability, specialised need or disability.
The curriculum consists of all activities planned by the academy to promote the intellectual, social, moral, spiritual, cultural and physical development of the learners with the aim of preparing learners for their life beyond school. Our curriculum is devised and reviewed with reference to national curriculum guidelines.
At the Olive AP Academy – Havering we offer a curriculum that meets the needs of learners in years 7 to 11 that is in line with the offer of local secondary schools. Subjects offered include English and mathematics, and a broad programme that addresses the wider schools curriculum offer. We have an enhanced personal & social education element to support personal development.
Students in years 10 and 11 also have access to alternative provision with a range of providers. Courses in motor mechanics, construction, animal care and sports studies are among the options available. All pupils are provided with the opportunity to gain English and Mathematics GCSE or equivalent before leaving the school in year 11.
In addition to the academic provision outlined above, all learners have access to mentoring by staff to ensure that they develop the learning and personal skills that enable them to close any gaps in their education. We believe that our students have the right to experience excellence in the quality of teaching they receive and that positive attitudes, progress, attainment and achievement are influenced by the quality of education our young people receive.
As part of our careers programme, we ensure that pupils in years 8-11 find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities. Pupils will have the opportunity to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer – through options evenings, assemblies, group discussions and taster events. Our pupils are also shown how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses available to them.
