Supporting primary pupils in Havering to re-engage with learning

This September, we launched a new part-time alternative provision outreach programme here at OA-Havering to support primary-aged pupils across the borough to re-engage with their education.

The programme offers eight to twelve-week placements for small groups of up to 10 Key Stage 2 pupils (aged 7-11) who are showing early signs of disengagement from school, including persistent absence, rising anxiety, or difficulties with regulation. Pupils continue to attend their mainstream school, spending two days a week at OA-HV where they are offered a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment to learn, grow and rebuild their confidence. Close collaboration with mainstream schools ensures the support is well-targeted, with each placement designed to equip pupils with the resilience and skills they need to thrive.

This joint approach with the London Borough of Havering (LBH) follows the Department of Education's three-tier framework for alternative provision, focusing on time-limited, specialist support for pupils.

Tony Machin, Executive Headteacher at OA-Havering, said:

"This provision is a true example of partnership working between Olive Academies and the London Borough of Havering. By intervening early, we can give pupils the extra support they need to overcome barriers, build confidence and successfully re-engage with their learning. Our shared focus is on ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to thrive and develop the skills they need for the next stage of their learning journey."

Councillor Oscar Ford, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at London Borough of Havering, said:

“Olive Academies’ expertise means they are driving improvements in Alternative Provision at a National Level, and so we are delighted to be collaborating on this new initiative to support Havering children.

“It demonstrates the borough’s wider commitment to identifying and supporting children at an early stage, helping them to stay in school and to thrive in the areas they need it most.”
